'Symbio' cyclist bridge
The special Symbio cyclists Bridge is the winning design of an architectural competition at the TU Delft. The project was commissioned by the Province of South Holland, the City of Delft and the Midden-Delfland Recreation Centre. The architect, Rafail Gkaidatzis, had the opportunity to realize the bridge in collaboration with Joris Smits and Royal HaskoningDHV.
The name ‘Symbio’ emphasizes the connecting function of the bridge between nature and technology. The bridge forms a walking and cycling connection between Sciencepark Technopolis and the recreational area Ackerdijkse Bos. The design is based on organic forms as they occur in nature, while the bright red colour gives the brigde a modern look.
For the coating SteelKote coating is used. This provides strong protection to the structure under extreme weather conditions and ensures a very long gloss retention. Lasting of the gloss ensures that the red colour stays bright over time.
